Japanese Hanami Picnic and Party

Japanese Hanami Picnic and Party

Hanami (flower viewing) is a gorgeous Japanese tradition of picnicking under the cherry blossoms in Spring. Whether you want to take a straightforward picnic to the park, have a Hanami orchad party or barbecue at home, or take it indoors if the weather isn't so good, Hanami makes for a colourful setting and some fun cooking and preparation!

Hanami Food & Drink
The Japanese pack their picnic food in bento boxes - lunch boxes with compartments for dissimilar types of food. The food for Hanami should be colourful, especially pink, white and green to reflect the colours of the bloom laden trees. Here are some ideas to get you started...

Yakitori Chicken (wonderful done on the barbecue, but just as great cold), Salmon Teryaki, Sushi Maki (you could get adventurous and try the cherry bloom version wrapped in salmon and made into a flower!), Tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omlette) - a bento box staple, Hanami Salad - a pretty cherry bloom inspired rice noodle salad, Dango rice dumplings (traditionally pink, white and green for Hanami) - a bit of an acquired taste for the Western palette so you could use pink and white marshmallows threaded on a bamboo skewer instead. Drink Sake! (preferably served warm).

Hanami Decoration
If you hanami in the park, you'll have the real cherry bloom to sit under. If you conclude to Hanami at home (outside or in) you can decorate with paper lanterns and sprigs of cherry blossom, and fold some cherry bloom napkins. You can find beneficial videos on how fold cherry bloom napkins on YouTube.

Eating Japanese Style
In Japan, food is often eaten off low tables and cushions on the floor, rather than Western style chairs and tables. If you are having a Hanami party at home and have a low table this might be nice to try.

You can't have a Japanese party without chopsticks! There are quite a few rules surrounding the use of chopsticks, the main ones being; don't spear your food with them or leave them sticking up in a bowl of rice and don't point with them or wave them nearby in the air.

You say "itadakimasu" ("I gratefully receive") before eating, and "gochisosama (deshita)" ("Thank you for the meal") afterwards.

When drinking alcohol, it is traditional to serve each other, rather than pouring your own drink so keep an eye on your friend's glasses!

And finally, in Japan its not unusual to see barbecues, karaoke machines and boom boxes, and even night time picnics in parks strung with lanterns. So go to town and have your own Hanami party... At home or in the park!

Adjustable Picnic Table Plans - Good For Kids and voyage

Adjustable Picnic Table Plans - Good For Kids and voyage

After all the time and exertion I spent building a children's picnic table, one of my friends commented, "You know, they're just going to grow out of it in a few years."

Needless to say, I didn't talk to him for a wee bit. But as I was talking it over with my wife, she told me, "What you should have done is made an adjustable table."

That idea never occurred to me before I started development the table. If it had, I probably would have looked straight through my woodworking plans for adjustable picnic table plans. As it was, I wanted to see what sort of extra exertion it would take.

It turns out there are two types of adjustable tables. For one type, you can build a table top like a normal table. The legs take a wee more exertion to make, but they adjust to make the table higher as the children grow. The benches stay the same size, but I could see how you could adapt the plans to make the legs get taller on those as well. The one thing I didn't like about the benches: they were detached. For kids, I prefer the attached benches.

The other type of adjustable picnic table is one that folds flat. It has many height settings, depending on where you place the legs at the bottom. What it most reminds me of is an oversized Tv tray. However, I could see that it would work well as an extra table or if you don't have a lot of room. And since it folds flat, it would be easy to converyance for picnics at the park or camping trips.

I decided I might just make a folding adjustable picnic table. It would without fail come in handy for the backyard birthday parties, and we could use it while camping. I'll without fail be using my plans for this project though. I don't want it to turn out like my first children's table project!

How to Build an Octagon Picnic Table

How to Build an Octagon Picnic Table

One of the excellent outdoor picnic tables is the eight-sided variety. Many a do-it-yourselfer has undertaken to learn how to build an octagon picnic table, and some have met with disastrous results. If you want to do a best than midpoint job on constructing one for yourself, think some of these key points.

How to Build an Octagon Picnic Table - Your Abilities and Tools

Everyone believes he/she is a carpenter of sorts, and many men and some women pride themselves on being a "handyman," but there are citizen who do not have the aptitude for taking raw materials and turning them into something useful. If you learn how to build an octagon picnic table but can't do the work properly, you will be unhappy with the results.

No power saw or other tool has a conscience. They will cut off your fingers and never apologize for doing it. One mistake can leave you injured, and it happens in the blink of an eye. This project requires the use of a miter saw, and if you do not know how to control one, make sure you read the hand-operated before attempting this project.

How to Build an Octagon Picnic Table - Materials to Use

Based on availability, there are some choices to make on what type of wood you should use. Most citizen will choose pressure treated, above ground pine because you can find it at any construction material store. This is probably the longest continuing wood you can buy.

Redwood or cedar are two similar soft woods that are easy to work with and will last for a long time outside. An added highlight is the great smell that these woods emit. You can normally find both cedar and redwood in whether planed or rough-hewn lumber. Stay away from the rough boards if you use whether of these species.

In some areas of the southeast, cypress is effortlessly available in 2" and 1" dimensional lumber. This is other long continuing wood that also produces a great looking table.

There are manufactured materials used for decks and other outdoor structures that last longer than wood and will not warp in the sun. It's not critical to paint this kind of material, but it can be done. Fastening the pieces together is a little awkward because fasteners don't recess into the material, and often screw-heads are left protruding to hang clothes or other items.

If you use the manufactured material, it is best to pre-drill holes and use galvanized screws to attach the parts. You will also need a counter sink bit to ensure that the heads of the screws are below the surface.

When using wood for the construction of the table, it is still best to use screws in all the areas where food, clothes, and hands will make contact because you can countersink them as you put them in with an galvanic drill. Nails will have a tendency to work back out over time as the wood cures.

Picnic Blankets Versus Picnic Tables

Does your family like to go picnicking? If so, are you advocates of picnic blankets or picnic tables? quarterly picnic goers have their favourites, you know! Some picnickers are hard and fast picnic blanket people while others like to sit at a picnic table. In this piece we will take a look at the pros and cons of picnic blankets and picnic tables.

The first idea is where are you going to hold this picnic? Is it going to be in your garden, in the country or on the beach? Picnic tables and their seats do not determine very well in sand, so unless you can nail your table and chairs to a set of old skis, you will probably find it easier to use blankets on the beach. In this case, use something that the sand sticks to like wool, because it cuts down on the sand drifting into the sandwiches.

Picnic Table

The next notice is, what was the weather like the day before? That is, is the grass likely to be damp or even muddy? If it is likely to be wet, then you will not want to be sitting on wet blankets and wet grass, although you could lay a waterproof sheet like a tarpaulin under the blanket. However, if it is likely to be muddy, I would be in favour of postponing the picnic until a drier time.

Picnic Blankets Versus Picnic Tables

The next notice is the fitness of the crowd you are going to be picnicking with. Are they physically capable of sitting on the ground and getting back up again? Numerous elderly people are not, neither are the overweight or people with bad backs or bad knees. If you want to take blankets anyway, you will have to supply seats for these people and they can eat off their knees.

Another notice is the whole of guests that have been invited. Picnic tables commonly seat four or six; six or eight at a shove, so if you are expecting twenty people, that is quite a few tables and chairs. Not many households can run to four or five picnic tables and twenty seats, but you could consider having the adults seated at tables and the children on blankets.

If you just can not get hold of the required whole of tables and seats, maybe some of your guests could bring their own to supplement what you already have. Most people are fairly willing to chip in if they have anyone you can use.

Whether you choose picnic blankets or picnic chairs depends on several factors including your own personal preference, but it is almost truly true to generalize that a younger group of picnicker will probably prefer a customary picnic on a blanket, while an older group will prefer sitting at picnic tables.

Therefore, in a mixed group of young and old, you should supply both picnic blankets and picnic tables almost in proportion to the whole of your guests who are older or younger, say more than and under forty years of age.

Picnic Tables - How to Build a Paving Pad For Your Picnic Table

Does your picnic table reside on your lawn? Do you have to move it every time you mow the lawn? Pretty frustrating - right? Right! A real hassle especially if the table is large! Creating a paving pad to put under your table solves this puny challenge and it doesn't impose a great deal of work or expense either. And it looks fantastic! And you can say with pride that you built it yourself!

Most picnic or Bbq tables are in the middle of 5' and 10' wide at their widest point. ( Many, these days are hexagonal or octagonal and so a quadrate pad is the most suitable. As long as your table is no bigger than 10' across, a 10'*10' pad would be ideal. The first thing to do is search the position that you want to have your picnic table in. Just remember that to shift it after you put the pad down is going to involve quite a bit of work. You can pick any size of paving stones however a 2'*2' paver , being so large means you don't have to put so many down. 25 in fact, 5 each way.

Picnic Table

Purchase the 25 2" pavers, (aggregate pebbles on top looks great) and you will need 4 lengths of 2"*4" treated lumber at 10' long as well as 8 4" galvanized nails and some lumber for pegs.

Picnic Tables - How to Build a Paving Pad For Your Picnic Table

Lay out the pavers on an unused section of lawn. Leave a small gap in the middle of them to allow for sand. Now portion the length along each side, cut the lumber at 45 degrees and nail the surrounding framework together. It will be a excellent fit. Now shift the lumber framework to the exact location that you want to place your picnic table. Make sure it is quadrate by measuring from corner to corner. Mark nearby the exterior of the frame with a spade. Shift the frame and dig out the lawn area out to a depth of 4".

Now place the frame into the area dug out. Check for square. You now need to get the whole framework level. Drive pegs into the ground inside the frame and when you have it level, nail the pegs to the frame. The frame should be level with the height of the grass.

Now you need some sand, about 1 3/4 cu yards of sand. This will raise the bottom of the dug out area by about 2". Level it off with a rake. Now you need to make a board to screen the sand to the accurate level, just under 2". The board needs to sit on the frame and increase down 1 3/4". Keep working at it until the area is as level as possible. This will rule how level you get the pavers. Without walking on the sand area fit all of the 25 pavers into the sand area. They will fit perfectly with a small gap in between.

You need a puny more sand to spread over the top of the pavers. Sweep the sand until all of the gaps are filled. Next it's time to compact the pavers. This can be done with a board and a hammer. The vibration will rule the pavers into the sand. When this is done it may need a puny more sand. Keep consolidating until no more sand disappears. Sweep the area of all the sand and - hey presto, you have a excellent paving pad for your picnic table. No more shifting the table to mow the lawn!

Picnic Table Plans - Build a Trestle Style Picnic Table

Maybe I'm being sentimental, but I miss the old wooden picnic table my grandparents had in their backyard. Most of the patio furniture I own now seems like a poor substitution for that amazing old redwood table with the checkerboard cloth. I've got a few tools in my shop, so last week I went seeing for some picnic table plans - hoping to build the same kind of picnic table I so fondly remember from my childhood.

Basic Picnic Table Construction
The picnic table plans I ultimately decided to go with are for a trestle style table - something that looks a lot like what my grandparents had. It calls for fairly uncomplicated construction; a type of glue-and-screw joinery that uses uncomplicated butt joints and outdoor adhesive. Nothing too involved there. And I can cut most of the wood with a cordless saw. After that, it's just a matter of getting all the pieces glued and screwed together with hardware.

Picnic Table

Start with the Feet
Rather than using uncomplicated cross-hatched legs (like the cheap picnic tables), a trestle table has two isolate leg sections settled at each end of the table. Two long stretcher boards span in the middle of the two legs, keeping all things solid and square. I'll start the task by production a foot for each leg. After that I'll make the leg itself, which includes a strip of wood (rail) along the top to retain the table itself.

Picnic Table Plans - Build a Trestle Style Picnic Table

Complete the Base
Up till now, I've been able to do most of the building down in my basement shop. But before I attach the legs to the stretchers, I'll need to move all things out to the garage or patio. At this point, it's probably easier to perfect the base assembly with the table flipped upside down. With a power drill in hand, my next step is to drill, glue, and drive woodscrews to join together the legs to the base.

Make the Top
For the top, my picnic table plans call for alternating 2x6's and 2x4's held together with 1x4 strips of wood called "cleats." Lay out all the boards on the floor, even up the edges, and then mount the cleats with woodscrews. I'll use a series of 1/4"-thick spacers and a couple of clamps to keep the boards steady while I mount the cleats.

Bring it All Together
With the assembled top still upside down, I'll lay the completed base on top and drill pilot holes straight through the stretchers and into the table top. Before flipping the table upright, I'll need to attach the two outer top rails for added strength. After applying some building adhesive, I'll drive 4"-long screws straight through the outer rail and leg, into the inner rail. Now it's time to flip the table upright.

Large Picnic Table Plans - How Large of a Picnic Table Do You Need?

Review

If you have a big family, a standard, four to six seater picnic table is not going to fit everyone. You need something that fits more people. How do you find the best large picnic table plans to meet your needs?

When I embarked on our table building journey, I first figured out how many people the table needed to fit. For us, we have six people in our family. We also sometimes have guests over. So a few of the options I thought about were an octagonal table, which seats eight, a large table, or manufacture more than one table.

Picnic Table

An octagonal table is both animated and large. However, the sides can be a puny narrow if you are seating folks over 200 pounds. I would make sure to leave the benches detached if this is the case, so each man can scoot their bench out as far as necessary. One of the nicest features of this type of table is that each man has their own defined space. The biggest drawback is that you are puny to eight people, so if you are animated more than that, you need a second table.

A large picnic table can be useful as well. It undoubtedly is easier to make than an octagonal table. You can also seat as many people as will fit on the bench. If some are small, you can fit quite a few! However, it can get a puny crowded and involve a lot of elbow rubbing.

For us, I decided to build a large picnic table for the adults, and a children's table. If I were to do it again, I would have built an adjustable folding table instead of a children's table. That way, we would be able to use the folding version as long as my craftmanship holds up. I did use a set of large picnic table plans in order to avoid a repeat of my first time building the kid's table.
